Wine Awesomeness Wine Reviews

Having a pretty good idea of the types of wines I enjoy and the regions they come from, I decided to start my journey with an a la carte selection from the Shop section of Wine Awesomeness’ website.

Knowing that I wanted to enjoy these wines with friends, all of whom are mostly red wine drinkers, I selected six bottles – four red and two white, for our Wine Awesomeness reviews.  Get 10% Off with code MEALFIND10 >>

The selection is below along with what my team of tasters had to say about each one:

2018 Vinã El Portalón Rueda Verdejo

wine-awesomeness-vina-el-portalion wine-awesomeness-vina-el-portalion2

  • Color: Light, soft, pale yellow
  • Nose: Melon, pear, apple, lemon, mildly peppery, very aromatic, and floral
  • Taste: Granny smith apple tartness, slightly sweet, medium-bodied, quite good with sharp cheese
  • Overall Impression: smooth, sippable, easy wine to drink on a warm summer day

2019 Jean Marc Barthez Bordeaux Blanc

  • Color: Golden, buttery, sunny yellow
  • Nose: Melon, apple, pear
  • Taste: Tangy, zingy, peppery, and tart with a bit of a bite at the back of the mouth
  • Overall Impression: A rich and creamy wine with a crisp, dry finish

2016 Gateway Douro

wine-awesomeness-gateway-duoro wine-awesomeness-gateway-duoro2

  • Color: Medium garnet, shiny red cranberry
  • Nose:  Woody, earthy, mossy, yet the first initial whiff brought forth smells of synthetic chemicals and tar for some
  • Taste: Berry jam, spicy
  • Overall Impression: Mixed reviews on this one. Some of us really enjoyed it and thought it would be an excellent wine to sip around a campfire in the summer… for others, it left them with an unpleasant burning sensation on their tongue and had a lackluster finish.

2019 Finca La Estacada ‘Ocho Y Medio’ Tinto Velasco

wine-awesomeness-tinto-velasco wine-awesomeness-tinto-velasco2

  • Color: Dark purple plum red
  • Nose: Berries (raspberries/blackberries/strawberries), black cherry, wet carpet/rocks
  • Taste: Spicy, dry, tangy, earthy, peppery, essence of prune juice, smooth, rich flavors
  • Overall Impression: Tasting team really enjoyed this wine — especially when paired with bruschetta and dark chocolate.

2016 Christophe Avi Buzet

  • Color: Dark red/garnet
  • Nose: sweet, black cardamom tea, dark cherries, cranberries, smokey
  • Taste: Battery acid (but not in a bad way), peppery, tangy berry jam, pomegranate
  • Overall Impression: Our tasting team had a lot of positive things to say about this vino. And all agreed it’s wonderful with sharp cheese and chocolate (milk and caramel) and would be excellent with a rich, smokey BBQ.

2018 Domaine Pélaquié Côtes du Rhône Rouge

wine-awesomeness-domaine-pelaque wine-awesomeness-domaine-pelaque2

  • Color: Deep purple-red — like blood platelets
  • Nose: Kerosine, oaky, woody, mossy, violets, worms in soil, a bit of a porta-potty smell at first, dry, dead flowers, spicy
  • Taste: Better than it smells. Cloves, black cherry, robust and mouth-filling
  • Overall Impression: Not sure if it’s because we saved this one for last but our group of tasters had some lively conversations about this one! Most agreed that it had the most character, biggest flavors, and was the most interesting and complex. One of my favorite descriptions was “classy lumberjack.”

Wine Awesomeness Reviews: Wine Cellar Tool

wine-awesomeness-wine-cellar

Wine Awesomeness has a feature called the “Wine Cellar” to provide customers with an interactive experience. You can rate and write notes about the wines you purchase, see what other customers have to say about the wines, get recipe pairings, and more.

We love this feature as it’s super helpful to keep track of wines you love (and those you don’t) so that you can order them again or send as gifts.  Get 10% Off with code MEALFIND10 >>

Unique. Modern. Fun. Flexible. Interesting. Unfussy.

Wine Awesomeness is a great wine club option for curious connoisseurs and entry-level ingenues alike. Their approach to bringing good-tasting wine to the fore in a non-intimidating way is truly clever and captivating.

What’s more is that their team clearly values and appreciates wine — where it comes from, who makes it, how it tastes — and sharing that journey with you.

And while we enjoyed our wines from Wine Awesomeness and their approach, we found the website to be outdated at times.

We recommend Wine Awesomeness to those looking for a fun wine experience buying wine, for those interested in discovering interesting wines every month, and for those looking for curated wine gift packs.  Give them a try!   SHOP NOW >>

Cheers!
