How do you make Sourdough Bread French Toast Casserole?
Making this casserole could not be easier and it feeds a crowd (about 8 to 10!). Even your kids can do it for a Mother’s Day breakfast surprise!
For this recipe, we used a loaf of bake-from-frozen sourdough bread from Wildgrain. We love this bread as it is made with clean ingredients including 100% organic, enriched, stone-ground, unbleached flours, nothing artificial, and is ready in around 30 minutes.
You can use any sturdy bread, like challah or brioche, that will not fall apart when combined with the egg mixture. We like sourdough because it really soaks up the egg mixture without becoming soggy or mushy.
The first thing you do is bake your Wildgrain sourdough bread loaf. This takes between 18 and 24 minutes. When the sourdough bread is done baking take it out of the oven and let it cool. If you have a premade loaf, skip to the next step.
Next, slice and cube the bread. Your cubes don’t have to be perfect as you will be covering it with a buttery cinnamon and sugar mixture. Then add the cubed bread to a greased 9 x 13 pan.
Now you can make the egg mixture. In a bowl, whisk together 8 eggs, 2 cups milk, 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 tbsp vanilla.
Pour this mixture over the bread, cover with cling wrap, and place in the refrigerator overnight.
Finally, make the topping, mix together 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp salt.
Cut 1/2 cup of cold butter into pieces and then cut into the mixture using two knives, or a pastry blender, until it is nice and crumbly.
Place the crumble mixture in a baggie and refrigerate overnight.
When you are ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350, sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the bread, and bake for 45 min to 1 hour. Your sourdough french toast casserole should be brown and crispy on the top and soft underneath.
You will know when your Sourdough French Toast Casserole is ready when it is brown on top and all of the liquid is firm (like scrambled eggs).
That’s it!
Enjoy this sourdough bread french toast casserole with a side of mixed berries and coffee or tea for a delightful holiday breakfast any time of year.
TIP: If you have leftover heavy whipping cream you can make an easy whipped cream to go on top. Simply whip 1 cup heavy whipping cream until soft peaks are about to form and then add 1 tsp vanilla and 1 tbsp confectioner’s sugar until soft peaks form. Do not overmix.
