Only 4 flavors

For our SmoothieBox review, I tried all four smoothie flavors as well as the collagen peptide protein add-in. I found the smoothies are easily made in around 1 minute, even in a morning haze. Simply add the smoothie pouch contents to your blender, add in your desired liquid (we used water, but almond milk, coconut water, or juice will work), optional collagen add-in, and then blend for about 30 seconds. In less than a minute your healthy breakfast, or lunch or snack, is served.
Like most smoothies, you can make 1 or 2 servings depending on how much liquid you use to blend. Each SmoothieBox smoothie pouch can make one large 16-20 oz smoothie or two smaller 8-12 oz smoothies. I prefer the large smoothie as a breakfast meal replacement and then divide one into 2 smaller smoothies for afternoon snacks.
After trying all four flavors, I found that SmoothieBox defers from other smoothie companies in 4 ways: collagen add-in, “smoothie chips”, smoothies aren’t too sweet, and they all have a creamy taste. Let’s start with the collagen add-in.
What is collagen and why add it to your SmoothieBox order?
Collagen is a protein found in our connective tissue that basically holds our bodies together. According to WebMD, collagen makes up about 75% of the dry weight of our skin and keeps it plump and line-free. As we age, we lose collagen faster than our bodies can replace it. We can get some back by using cosmetic injectables like fillers or we can try a more pro-active approach by consuming collagen in our daily diets to slow the loss.
Ingestible collagen peptide supplements have been linked to strengthening hair and nails as well as supporting a healthy gut and bone/joint health and are usually made with ground-up fish or animal parts (don’t worry, you can’t taste them in your smoothies!). But, as you can imagine, not all supplements are created equal so you need to seek out collagen peptides that are made from high-quality ingredients to ensure that you aren’t being exposed to potentially harmful things like heavy metals from ground-up fish or bacteria from ground-up animal parts.
Lucky for you, SmoothieBox understands the benefits of high-quality collagen peptides, using only grass-fed pasture-raised cows to create their quality collagen peptide add-in, and includes the option to add this supplement to every order.
TIP: Research varies on the amount of collagen to consume daily from 5g to 20g. We suggest doing your own research to see what is best for you. You may want to use half a packet in your smoothie vs the whole packet so that they last longer!
The next unique thing we noticed is that SmoothieBox adds “Smoothie Chips” to their smoothie pouches. They use these as a way of “fine tuning the flavor and nutrient profile of our smoothies”. The Smoothie Chips in the Berry smoothie, for example, consist of Sweet Potato Puree, Banana Puree, Raw Hemp Seeds, and Lemon Juice. These chips also add to that creamy taste that I mentioned earlier. And after looking at the ingredients for all of the smoothies, I found that they each have one or more naturally creamy ingredients: Green With Apple includes avocado, Clementine includes sweet potato and coconut cream, Cacao includes banana and coconut cream, and Berry includes sweet potato and banana. This isn’t good or bad, just something that was unique 🙂
In addition, none of the smoothies are overly sweet which I personally enjoy. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, try adding a sweet fresh fruit like bananas, pineapple, or strawberries or use a lightly sweetened fruit juice as your liquid.
My favorite smoothie flavor was Berry as I really love any and all berry smoothies. This smoothie tasted like creamy strawberry and blueberry and was not very sweet. My next favorite was the Green With Apple as it tasted like a slightly sweet green salad. The Clementine has a strong ginger carrot flavor that was a nice surprise, but I was hoping for the “orange creamsicle” taste that SmoothieBox promised. Last, the Cacao smoothie tasted like a watered-down dark chocolate and banana milkshake and was more of a dessert for me than breakfast as I’m not a fan of chocolate for breakfast (I know, I know, I’m the only one!). But I know many people, like my sister, who would drink one of these every morning!
SmoothieBox Review: Smoothie Flavors and Ingredients
SmoothieBox offers four smoothie flavors including Berry, Green With Apple, Cacao, and Clementine. In addition, they offer an optional collagen peptide protein add-in.
Tastes like: SmoothieBox says it tastes like “Freshly picked berries with a hint of creamy banana”; we found that it tasted like creamy berries.
Ingredients: Strawberries, Wild Blueberries, Cauliflower and Smoothie Chips (Sweet Potato Puree (100% Sweet Potato, no additives), Banana Puree (Banana, Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid), Raw Hemp Seeds (Hemp Seeds [Cannabis Sativa]), Lemon Juice (Water, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Lemon Oil), Beet Juice Concentrate (Beet Juice Concentrate, Citric Acid))
Green With Apple
Tastes like: SmoothieBox says it tastes like “A bright and tangy avocado salad”; we found that it tasted like –
Ingredients: Pineapple*, Granny Smith Apple*, Chopped Spinach* and Smoothie Chips (Avocado*, Flax Seed*, Hemp Hearts*, Lemon Juice*, Apple Juice*)
Tastes like: SmoothieBox says it tastes like “An orange creamsicle with a ginger boost”; we found that it tasted like predominantly like ginger and carrots and did not get an orange creamsicle taste.
SmoothieBox brings you four healthy smoothies that are not too sweet with a creamy taste and optional collagen peptide protein add-in. As someone in my 40’s, I wish that I had known about collagen peptides 10 years ago so that I could’ve better supported my skin health from the inside out (as well as my gut). But better now than never! We loved the Berry and Green With Apple flavors for breakfast and enjoyed the Cacao as an afternoon snack. The one drawback is the limited number of flavors. If you like to try new things or mix up your meals, you may get bored with only 4 flavors.
If you are looking for a healthy protein-packed meal replacement or snack alternative with the added benefits of supporting your skin, hair, nails, gut health, and joints I recommend trying out SmoothieBox with the collagen peptide protein add-in.
