Salt and Straw has set out to not only make incredibly tasty, unique, and flavorful ice cream using quality ingredients, they are also supporting local communities in which they have stores, building a connection and a place to gather.

Their ice cream is special as they start with cream from grass-fed cows that are never given growth hormones or antibiotics raised on a fifth-generation, family-owned dairy farm.

In their own kitchen, they take care of how they churn the ice cream, they max out the butterfat content to achieve a soft, luxurious texture, and pack each pint with unique local ingredients.

With over 15 flavors to choose from, it was hard to pick just 5 flavors, but we ended up going with Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons, Cold Brew Coffee Cashew Praline, Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip, Maple & Bacon Streusel, and Birthday Cakes and Blackberries.

Your Salt and Straw order arrives frozen solid in a box lined with ClimaCell insulated box liners, topped with dry ice, and under ice packs. We love ClimaCell as it’s made from renewable plant-based components and paper and is fully curbside recyclable.

We decided to try our ice cream at a pre-Thanksgiving dinner we hosted for family.

As dinner came to a close I was more excited than usual for dessert (my favorite!) as I knew what was waiting.

My dad brought a yummy apple pie which went perfectly with the Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons, the Cold Brew Coffee Cashew Praline, and the Maple & Bacon Streusel.  SHOP NOW >>

Is Salt and Straw ice cream worth it?

Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons – This ice cream is packed with hand-burned caramel and Guatemalan fleur de sel (sea salt) and was a favorite for our group!  B

urnt salted caramel is one of my personal ice cream favorites as it has a deeper caramel taste and is hard to find, but this pint really stacked up with others that I have had.

Cold Brew Coffee Cashew Praline – I’m not a huge coffee ice cream fan, but my dad loves it so I ordered this for him to try.  This ice cream includes housemade caramelized praline with a coffee ice cream base.  The praline is delicious and brings out the coffee flavor of the ice cream.

Another favorite even for this non-coffee ice cream person!

Birthday Cakes and Blackberries – This pint was for my son because he loves vanilla ice cream and birthday cake.  This ice cream has chunks of rainbow-sprinkled birthday crumble and large ribbons of blackberry jam throughout the double-vanilla ice cream.

I was afraid that this would be too sweet, but the tartness and acidity from the blackberry jam cut through the sweetness to balance out this ice cream.  Another favorite!

vegan mint chocolate chip ice cream-salt and straw ice cream review-mealfinds

Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip – We wanted to give a vegan ice cream a try and this one did not disappoint.  In fact, no one even noticed that it was vegan, that’s how creamy the texture was.  This pint has a coconut base with pure Oregon mint oil that doesn’t taste like fake mint and organic TCHO chocolate pieces.

A very good mint chocolate chip ice cream!

Maple & Bacon Streusel – I was super excited for this ice cream as I love the maple bacon flavor combo, but was a bit disappointed as I didn’t taste the bacon flavor over the cinnamon brown sugar streusel.

However, I did like the salted maple ice cream base.

Overall, we found that our Salt and Straw ice cream pints tasted delicious and the unique flavors blew us all away!  SHOP NOW >>

Salt and Straw Ice Cream Review: Bottom Line

maple and bacon streusel-salt and straw ice cream review-mealfinds

Salt and Straw delivers small-batch, chef-created ice cream handmade using unique ingredients sourced from small farms and emerging artisans directly to your door.

We absolutely LOVED the Salt and Straw ice cream that we received!  The texture was creamy and each flavor was truly unique.

We also love that you can make a one-time purchase, sign up for a subscription, or give an ice cream gift.  The new and seasonal flavors keep your monthly subscription interesting and give us a reason to come back for more.  The vegan options are not extensive, but definitely nice to have as is the egg-free ice cream base that is used for all Salt and Straw flavors.

And while we loved our ice cream, Salt and Straw is more expensive than anything you will find in your local grocery store and the additional shipping fee doesn’t help.  But, as we have learned over the past several years of reviewing products, you do get what you pay for and this ice cream tastes AMAZING!

In addition, flavors come and go, and already one of our favorites has left the menu.

Compared to other high-end, high-quality online ice cream delivery services that we have reviewed Salt and Straw prices are in line with what we have seen and the unique flavor combinations are second to none.

We recommend Salt and Straw to anyone who loves ice cream, to those who like to try new and interesting ice cream flavors, and to anyone looking for a fun and unique gift idea for the sweet lover in your life.  SHOP NOW >>

Enjoy!
