You might be wondering about the quality of rescued produce…I know I was. But then I read that around 20% of produce goes to waste every year for no good reason at all.
Here are the top reasons why fresh, delicious produce doesn’t make it to the grocery store shelves:
Produce is too big, too small, isn’t the right color, or has blemishes so it is left in the field to rot
Farmers have a stronger than expected season and are unable to sell the surplus
Wholesalers buy too much and need a buyer to rescue it or it will go to waste
So there is nothing wrong with the produce, it may just look a little odd. Same thing for the grocery and pantry items. They may not look perfect or might be close to the “sell-by” date, but they are perfectly safe to eat.
Giving Back
Hungry Harvest says that every box saves at least 10 pounds of food from going to waste and since 2014 they’ve rescued over 27 million pounds of produce helping to reduce food waste.
In addition, Hungry Harvest gives back by supporting local hunger-solving partners and charities. They have provided over 1.7 million pounds of food to those in need and will continue to donate and expand their Emergency Box Food program to get food to those who need it the most.
Getting Started
To get started with Hungry Harvest check to be sure they deliver to your zip code, select your Harvest Box size, and then create an account.
Hungry Harvest boxes are fully customizable. Your customization window is based on your delivery location and day with most 1-3 days before delivery. If you want to be surprised, you can let Hungry Harvest select for you based on your preferences, including your “Never List” and “Love It List”. Get $10 OFF My First Box with code HARVEST10 >>
NOTE: Even if you don’t customize your box it will still ship. And you must meet your box minimum each week.
Hungry Harvest notes that some of the farmers they work with use organic growing methods but can’t afford to go through USDA organic certification. So you may be getting organic produce without the hefty price tag!
We filled our mini Harvest box with apples, pears, nectarines, salad greens, mangoes, peaches, and avocado to reach our $15 minimum.
Our box arrived in good shape, everything was cold, and almost all of the fruits and veggies looked ok. Some of our tomatoes were a bit bruised, but still ok to eat. Get $10 OFF My First Box with code HARVEST10 >>
Here is a breakdown of the Harvest items we received and how much we paid for each:
1 Apple: $0.84
1 ORGANIC Pears: $1.09 (Actually received 2 organic pears!)
In your first Hungry Harvest box, you will receive a free Storage Guide. This guide is filled with storage best practices for 40 of the most popular fruits and veggies.
We really enjoyed exploring the Marketplace and added $10 in Marketplace items to our mini Harvest box. The Marketplace is full of extra produce as well as yogurt, cheese, fresh bread, grains, nuts, snacks, plant-based meat, and more.
Hungry Harvest says that there are fresh herbs in their Marketplace, but unfortunately, we did not see any during our customization window. We also did not see any meat or seafood.
Yes! We compared the price of the items in our mixed mini Hungry Harvest box with those at our local Giant Foods grocery store, Whole Foods Market, or online prices.
Overall, we saved $6.20 by shopping with Hungry Harvest than with our local grocery stores! See below for a price comparison.

Hungry Harvest Reviews: Tips
We found greater savings with Marketplace items than with our Harvest items. Stock up in the Marketplace if you see a killer deal.
Meet the FREE Shipping minimum of $29.99 so that you don’t have to pay for shipping. This will increase your savings.
Hungry Harvest works with farmers and creators to rescue produce and grocery items and delivers them directly to your door. This convenient service not only saves you time and money but also supports a better food system and local hunger-fighting organizations.
We love that you can purchase a mixed mini box for just $15, that all boxes are fully customizable, and you get access to items in the Marketplace. We also love that you have the option to choose an all Organic box, though this box is not available in all states.
Overall, we saved 18% by shopping with Hungry Harvest over our local grocery stores and would recommend shopping in the Marketplace for great deals and meeting the $29.99 Free Shipping minimum to really save.
And while we love the low starting price, Hungry Harvest is not available in all states and there is also a shipping fee for all order under $29.99.
In addition, the Hungry Harvest website is a bit confusing when trying to place an order and it was hard to figure out how to add items to our Harvest Box. The Marketplace on the other hand was easy to navigate.
Compared to other grocery and food rescue boxes that we have reviewed, Hungry Harvest offers a mini box option at a lower price point ($15) than others as well as fully customizable organic and conventional produce boxes with free shipping for orders over $29.99. Others do offer meat/seafood and herbs, both not an option when we filled our box.
We recommend Hungry Harvest to anyone looking for convenient grocery delivery, those looking to rescue fruit and veggies who want a smaller box option at a lower cost, and those who want to fully customize their box, and those looking to give back while rescuing produce and pantry items.
